1. When did the family of Gulnaz feel that their sorrow was unbearable?

Ans. For three or four days when their neighbours sent a tray of food for them, they had no problem. But when the tray of food stopped coming and they did not have anything to eat in the family, they began to realize that their sorrow was unbearable.

2. Why had the older boy wait for privacy at the grocer’s shop?

Ans. The older boy reached to the grocer’s shop to get rice, flour, and potatoes but had no money. He wanted to take them on credit. So he waited in order to talk to the grocer in privacy.

3.How did Gulnaz cheat people in harmless ways?

Ans. When Gulnaz was called upon to wash clothes, she used a can or two more water to enable her husband to earn some more money. By playing this trick she cheated people in harmless ways.

4.What changes were there in the village due to the cold?

Ans. It was very cold in the month of January. So people went out only for work. There was nobody under the oak trees and courtyards of the mosques and other cool places where children gathered in the summer.

5. Why did the grocer refused to give the things to the boy?

Ans. The grocer did so because first, the boy had no money to buy the things, and secondly, he knew that the boy was extremely poor and could not pay for the things the next day.

6. ‘This way of earning, was like digging with a needle’. How?

Ans. Darsan Agha had to carry water from the fountains. He could carry two cans on a trip. He got only 3 kurush for each trip. It was a very small amount in comparison to his work. Thus it was very hard work to earn his living.

 

Answer the following questions in 80 words.

1. Describe the pathetic condition of Dursun’s family.

Ans. Dursun was a poor water carrier. When he died accidentally his family had no one to support them. His neighbours sent food for the family for three or four days. But when the food stopped coming they had to face unbearable hunger. The elder son fell ill. The people of the neighbourhood did not call Gulnaz for work. So the condition of the family became very pathetic.
