1. What was the cause of the quarrel between the Lily and the Rose?
Ans. There arose a dispute among the flowers in the manner of a beauty contest. The Rose and the Lily had been rivals to get the status of the best flower for a long time. This was the cause of the quarrel.
2. Why did Cupid(God of Love) come to Flora?
Ans. The God of Love (Cupid) came to Flora to get the most beautiful and most elegant flower who has the honor of being the queen of flowers. He wished such a special flower that should be as sweet-smelling as that of the rose and as beautiful as the lily.
3. How did the God of love hesitate in selecting the colour of the desired flower?
Ans. When the goddess of vegetation, Flora asked God of love about the colour of his desired flower. First, he selected ‘Rose Red’ then he said ‘Lily White.’ Then he asked for the combination of the two. It shows his hesitation in selecting the flower’s colour.

Ans. Through the symbolic victory of the lotus, the poet wants to establish the victory of Indian culture over Western Culture. It is because the lotus is the Indian flower while the rose and the lily are the western flowers.

Ans. The dispute is between the rose and the lily flower. Both have been rivals for a long time. The rose and the lily want to get the title of the supreme beauty. Neither the rose nor the lily wins the context.

Context –> These lines are about the desire of love to get such a lovely and special flower that possesses the beauty of both the flowers, the rose, and the lily.
Explanation –> In these lines the poet describes the conversation between love(God of love) and Flora(Goddess of vegetation). Love asks Flora to give him such a beautiful and special flower that should have the charm and sweetness of the rose and stateliness and proud appearance of the lily. Flora then asked him about the colour of the flower, he would like. This question slightly confused Love. He first selected rose-red colour and then lily-white and then finally, he prayed for the combination of the two.

Context –> In these lines, the poet tells about the claims and arguments of different powerful poets on the rose and the lily.
Explanation –> In these lines, the poet describes the claims or argument made by two groups of flower-loving poets. A group of famous poets praise the flower of the lily. These poets criticized the rose flower. They claim that the rose flower can never stand straight with pride as the lily. The other group of poets praise the rose. They argue that lily looks pale(less charming) and stands looking like the Goddess(Juno). Now the question arises if the lily is lovelier than the rose. To take a decision, both the groups go to a garden(bower) to establish the superiority of their favourite flower.
