Basics Of Past Tense
(1) Past Indefinite or Simple Past Tense
*2nd form of the verb is used in the simple sentence of past indefinite and did+1st form of the verb is used in other sentences of past indefinite.
formulae:-
Affirmative Sentence –> +ve –> Sub.+ 2nd form of the verb+ object +others.
Negative Sentence –> -ve –> Sub.+did not + 1st form of verb +object+others
Interrogative Sentence –> ? –> Wh word+did+subject+1st form of verb+object+others ?
Interrogative Negative Sentence –> Wh word+did+subject+not+1st form of verb+object+others ?
Examples:
- I wrote an essay.
- It rained yesterday.
- I did not play football.
- Priya did not sing a song.
- Did he go to school?
- Why did they go to market?
- Did I not sing a song?
- Why did Anjali not finish her work?
(2) Past Continuous Tense or Past Progressive Tense
Helping Verb:-
Was –> with I, he, she, it and singular subject
Were–> with we, you, they, and a plural subject
Main Verb:- 1st form of the verb+ing
Formulae:-
Affirmative –> Subject+was/were+1st form of verb+ing+object+others.
Negative –> Subject+was/were+not+1st form of verb+ing+object+others.
Interrogative –> Wh word+was/were+subject+1st form of verb+ing+object+others?
Interrogative Negative –> Wh word+was/were+subject+not+1st form of verb+ing+object+others?
Examples:-
- I was going home.
- Disha was eating food.
- Prince was not playing.
- Himanshi was not reading.
- Were you going to school?
- Why was Rashi not coming to school?
- Was mother not preparing our breakfast?
- Why was Anu not replying?
(3) Past Perfect Tense
Helping verb:- Had = With all subjects
Main verb:- 3rd form of the verb
Formulae:-
Affirmative –> Subject+had+3rd form of the verb+object+others.
Negative –> Subject+had not+3rd form of the verb+object+others
Interrogative –> Wh word+had+subject+3rd form of the verb+object+others.
Interrogative Negative –> Wh word+had+subject+not+3rd form of the verb+object+others.
Examples:-
- He had already heard this news.
- I had finished my work.
- I had not received your letter till yesterday.
- Had you done your work?
- Why had he already heard the news?
- Why had you not done your work?
(4) Past Perfect Continuous Tense
Helping Verb:- Had been = With all subjects
Main Verb:- 1st form of the verb+ ing
since –> With the point of time (2001, noon, morning,8 O’clock)
for –> With the period of time (a month, two hours, five years)
Formulae:-
Affirmative –> Subject+had been+1st form of the verb+ing+object+since/for+time+others.
Negative –> Subject+had not been+1st form of the verb+ing+object+since/for+time+others.
Interrogative –> Wh word+had+subject+been+1st form of the verb+ing+object+since/for+time+others
Interrogative Negative –> Wh word+had+subject+not been+1st form of the verb+ing+object+since/for+time+others
Examples:-
- He had been working hard for a month.
- You had been reading since noon.
- We had not been living in Delhi since 2001.
- He had not been learning his lesson since 8 O’clock.
- Had Aman been working hard for a month?
- Why had Sapna been singing a song for twenty minutes?
- Why had they not been driving for two hours?
- Why had they not been exercising since morning?
